These non traditional advertising methods are highly effective tactics that can play an effective part in the local advertiser’s marketing strategy. Non traditional is designed to cut through the clutter of traditional advertising to grab the attention of your customer.
The majority of out of home advertising is designed to appeal to women, who often make purchase decisions for their household. By placing advertisements on dry cleaning bags or beauty salons, you are reaching a very specific demographic, and you can choose what geographical location interests you.
Beauty salon billboard advertising can allow you to reach a captive audience for hours. Even the aprons, process boards and manicure mats in beauty salons can be turned into advertisements for your company. Again, by specifying a radius where you think most of your customers live, you can focus your advertising to prevent wasted circulation.
Any time Wachovia bank opens a new branch, they use door hangers on area households to make home owners aware of the new branch that has opened. This is more effective than local mailers and allows them to bypass the extreme competition found in traditional media outlets.
Perhaps a grocery store blitz featuring floor mats, interior billboards, and receipt tape would be a good way to promote your new interior design firm. Kroeger grocery store allows very sleek LCD screens in their grocery stores and charges the media space owner to place ads on the screens.

A variation on mobile advertising is mobile display. This involves setting up a showcase in a clear truck and driving it around your target city. In the 1960’s and 1970’s two marketing professors, David Aaker and James Carman summarized an experiment designed to isolate causes of weak advertising. Of the 4 recommendations they issued, two of them dealt with
o The large amount of clutter in the advertisement arena (and we’re talking about 1970 here!)
o Competitive increases in advertising by competitors mimicing successful advertising methods
The other two causes had to deal with marketing elements of the product such as the packaging.
Non Traditional advertising neutralizes both of these problems and allows your firm to surprise the customer and establish an equity stake in your target market effectively and cost-efficiently.
